THE J. PAUL GETTY CENTER

For those that think L.A.'s culture begins and ends with its blockbuster billboards on Sunset Blvd., they should check out the J. Paul Getty Center, just west of Beverley Hills. This museum contains European paintings, photography from the US and Europe and a large sculpture collection. It is also considered to be one of the best museums in the world for Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. The light-filled building, designed by Richard Meier, is beautiful and is worth a visit in itself. The museum is constantly adding to its collection and recent acquisitions include "Portrait of Alfonso d'Avalos" by Titian, Chardin's "Still Life with Fish, Vegetables, Gougeres, Pots, and Cruets on a Table" and the French Realist painter, Gustave Coubet's "Grotto of Sarraxine near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne.
