Leave your preconceptions behind and enjoy a surprising visit to the city of angels! When you think of Los Angeles three things come to mind, Hollywood, sun and, yes, Disneyland! Yet, if you were only to concentrate on these aspects of this fascinating city in California, you would be missing out. Los Angeles is surprisingly diverse in its character and its range of attractions. Film does play a big part here and its industry is still one of the biggest in the city. Cinema has really grown up in L.A. and places such as Hollywood Boulevard, Beverley Hills, and Universal and Warner Studios, detail this history. California's climate is a major attraction with average temperatures from 18C to 22C year-round. If you travel a little outside the centre of L.A. you will find some excellent beach resorts such as Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Not surprisingly, with so many artists migrating to the area, L.A. has some world-class cultural centres. Two of the best are the Getty Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art. For something completely different visit the Queen Mary ship, a chance to view a historical boat along the lines of the doomed Titanic. Disneyland still remains a firm favourite with most tourists and should not be left off your itinerary. Kids and the young at heart will find plenty to enjoy here with all your favourite characters as well as films, parades and roller coaster rides. Though a lot of attractions are situated in the centre of Los Angeles, others are spread out and L.A. is not a pedestrian-friendly as some cities. Rent a car to easily access various points in L.A. as well as its beaches a few miles outside. If not, public transport can be caught from downtown to most locations. To make the most of your visit to Los Angeles, mix and match its traditional attractions with some of its more surprising ones. You will discover a city beyond your expectations and find a location to return to again and again. |
