For an insight into how the Titanic might have looked or felt, take a visit to the Queen Mary ocean liner, permanently docked in Long Beach. The Queen Mary took 1001 Atlantic crossings between 1936 and 1964 and has been docked in Long Beach since 1967. If anything it is more luxurious than the Titanic and is larger (1,019 feet to the Titanic's 882). Various tours are offered of the ship. You can take the Shipwalk tour, a self-guided exploration of the Queen Mary and its 365 staterooms. You can enjoy the "Ghosts and Legends of the Queen Mary" tour which tells all the legendary tales of the ship including the wet footprints which regularly appear in a swimming pool which has been closed for 30 years! Or you can go on a tour of the nearby Scorpion, a Cold-war era Russian submarine. The Queen Mary also offers a number of first-class restaurants and you can arrange to stay in a Stateroom overnight if you so please. Recommended is the elaborate Champagne Sunday Brunch offered every week. Remember to book well in advance for all restaurant meals. Prices to tours begin at $10 for adults. Long Beach is not far from Los Angeles centre and you can catch the Metro Rail Blue Line from downtown L.A. |
