Los Angeles' answer to New York's MOMA is well worth a visit. Situated in an area of downtown Los Angeles labelled the "cultural corridor", it is one of the country's foremost collections of modern art and contains over 5,000 objects in all. Paintings, sculptures, and photographs from the1940s to the present day are displayed here. Highlights include The Barry Lowen Collection containing minimalist painting and sculpture and The Parson Foundation Photography Collection containing over 2,300 documentary pictures by well-known photographers. Of particular interest might be the works by such familiar names as Tracey Emin and the late Jackson Pollack. The MOCA is actually spread over 3 locations. The MOCA on Grand Avenue houses the main collection and is distinguished by its underground galleries and Patinette café. MOCA the Geffen Contemporary is only five minutes away on North Central Avenue and has its own art store. Finally the MOCA Pacific Design Center is home to exhibitions on architecture and design and is located on Melrose Avenue. A good idea is to visit the first 2 galleries on the same day as a ticket to the main gallery covers admission to the Geffen. The same ticket is also good for the Design Center once used within 30 days. Museum hours are 11 am to 5 pm, Mondays, 11 am to 8 pm Thursdays and 11 am to 6 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays the museums are closed and a handy tip to know is that admission is free all day Thursdays. |
