SANTA MONICA

What better way to enjoy Los Angeles' warm weather than to relax on some of its nearby beaches. Thirteen miles from downtown L.A. is one of the county's premier seaside resorts, Santa Monica. Though a city in itself, its beaches and surroundings are its main attractions, and it has a more layback feel than the centre of L.A. city.
For sun-worshippers, Santa Monica offers 3 and a half miles of sandy white beach. You can bike, surf or rollerblade in the area or fish along the pier. Pacific Park is a hugely popular amusement park near the beach. There you can ride on its Ferris Wheel or the rollercoaster. Along the cliff tops is Palisades Park, which as well as offering breath-taking views of Santa Monica Bay, has many shops, a meditation centre, restaurants and art galleries. Volleyball courts are situated on the south side of the Pier. For more of a mental challenge check out the International Chess Park on Ocean Front Walk. Here chess tables are set up for challenges and always attract curious onlookers.
If you tire of the beach you can also visit the Santa Monica National Recreation Area, a huge park which takes in much of the Santa Monica Mountains.
