The name, Venice Beach, is familiar to most of us, though, we may not be sure why. So what exactly does this popular seaside location, just south of Santa Monica, have to offer? Actually, quite a lot. Venice is part beach resort, part adult playground. The beach alone is worth a visit. With 3 miles of sand and almost guaranteed sunshine, every sun-worshipper will be happy. Not surprisingly the beach can get quite crowded so try to arrive mid-morning during the weekend or weekdays to gain your spot. Walk along Venice Boardwalk, though, and you will see the extraordinary sights which have made the area infamous. This is where street entertainers, including belly dancers and palm readers, earn their living and many funky shops and services are situated here. Muscle Beach is where extreme body builders come to work out. Other attractions include a children's play area, and basketball courts and volleyball tournaments. This area of Los Angeles has always attracted the artistic and free-thinkers including Jim Morrison who once lived here. It is no surprise then to discover that the area is awash with galleries, new agers and musicians. For other nearby beach destinations try Long Beach or Malibu. |
